High-school English in the academy market is score-driven. Students are working towards the university entrance exam, whose English section is reading-heavy, or towards study abroad, which brings in TOEFL, SAT and AP preparation. The teaching is precise rather than playful: close reading of difficult passages, essay structure, vocabulary at a level few textbooks reach, and detailed feedback on written work.
Because high-school students spend the whole day at school, their academy classes run late into the evening and on weekends, and vacation intensives are long. Some employers ask for a degree in a related field or prior experience with test preparation. Ask about class size, the latest finishing time, how much marking sits outside class, and what the vacation timetable looks like. Related: SAT, ACT and AP, TOEFL, and middle-school students.
