About these jobs

3 of 3 state pay — see salary data across the whole board. Listings copied from another board say so, and are not verified by us.

Writing and debate classes sit at the upper end of the children's academy market — essay, composition, critical reading and structured argument, usually for upper-elementary and middle-school students whose parents are investing in a specific outcome. Academies hiring for it tend to want a demonstrable writing background, and interviews sometimes include marking a sample.

The thing to look at closely is marking. Written work has to be read and corrected, and in many academies that happens outside the timetabled class — so how many pieces per week, and whether that time is inside your paid hours or after them, is the difference between a comfortable schedule and a heavy one. Ask it before you accept. Related: subjects taught in English and phonics.
