TOEIC and OPIc are the domestic employment tests, and by volume of test-takers this is the largest adult English market in Korea. Students are university students preparing to job-hunt and employees who need a score for hiring, promotion or a transfer — which means demand tracks the Korean corporate recruiting calendar rather than the academic one. Hiring is at adult academies, university career and language centres, and in-company programs.
Both tests reward familiarity with their own conventions, and OPIc in particular is a recorded speaking test with a predictable structure that students drill. The teaching is therefore closer to coaching a performance than to general conversation. Classes are frequently early morning or evening to fit around work, and per-class pay is common.
