Kindergarten classes are the biggest single corner of the Korean academy market. Much of the work is at English kindergartens — private academies that run the whole kindergarten day in English — and the rest at academies teaching a morning kindergarten block before their elementary students arrive in the afternoon. The day starts earlier than almost anything else on the board and is built around very young learners: songs, phonics, picture books, crafts and a great deal of classroom management.
What decides the job is the shape of the day rather than the title. Ask how many of the hours are spent teaching, whether the afternoon elementary classes are part of the same contract, how many children are in a class, and whether a Korean homeroom teacher is in the room with you. Kindergarten roles also carry work beyond the lesson — daily notes home, report cards, school events and performances — so ask what the week holds outside class. Related: phonics and early literacy, jobs with housing provided, and the Seoul and Gyeonggi boards, where much of it is advertised.
