Lucy's introduction

Japan is famously welcoming to foreign English teachers through the JET Programme and private sector positions. The salary-to-cost ratio isn't as strong as Korea or China, but the quality of life, cultural richness, and sheer beauty of the country make it one of the most sought-after teaching destinations in the world.

Visa requirements

The Instructor visa (for public school ALTs) or Specialist in Humanities visa (for private sector) are the standard routes. JET applicants receive full visa support. For private positions, your school handles the Certificate of Eligibility. Processing takes approximately 3–6 weeks once your CoE is issued.

JET vs Eikaiwa vs International school

JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme) is the gold-standard government programme — excellent support, good salary, and a remarkable cultural experience. Eikaiwa (private conversation schools like Nova, AEON, Berlitz) are accessible entry points with full training. International schools in Tokyo and Osaka pay well but require full teaching qualifications.

Salary & cost of living

JET pays ¥3.36M/year in Year 1. Eikaiwa typically pays ¥240,000–290,000/month. International schools pay ¥300,000–500,000+. Tokyo is expensive — monthly rent for a small apartment can be ¥80,000–150,000. Regional cities and rural placements are far cheaper and offer a more authentic Japan experience.

Required documents

Degree certificate, criminal background check, passport, passport-sized photos, Certificate of Eligibility (arranged by employer). JET applicants submit a full application pack via their country's Japanese Embassy. The JET application process opens in late autumn for the following July start.

Lucy's honest take

Japan rewards patience and curiosity. The first few months can feel bewildering — the systems are different, the language barrier is real, and the social conventions take adjustment. But once you settle in, it's unlike anywhere else. I've never eaten better, felt safer, or been surrounded by such extraordinary natural beauty. If you get the chance, take a rural JET placement. You'll have stories for the rest of your life.
